TANK TIGHTNESS TESTING USING MASS
Tank tightness testing using mass measurement , measures the pressure that the liquid in an above ground tank exerts. The temperature of the liquid does not affect the pressure because the mass remains constant. Similar to volumetric methods, an unexplained loss may indicate the presence of a leak.
Helium leak testing is a precise means of leak detection. Helium is injected underneath a tank bottom. The helium diffuses throughout the tank bottom and easily penetrates and defective welds, cracks or pin holes. The tank interior is then scanned using a helium sniffing probe. An increased level of helium near the surface will indicate a leak in the above ground storage tank.

EMERGENCY CONTAINMENT ASSESSMENTS
Federal and several state agencies require emergency spill containment areas to be capable of containing a volume equal to 110% of the volume of the largest tank within the containment area.
In addition, the permeability of the containment to the materials stored must be equal to or better than 1 x 10-6 cm/sec and the containment must be able to contain a release for a minimum of 72 hours.
